P3: Psalms, Proverbs, and Prophets
“You gave abundant showers, O God; you refreshed your weary inheritance. Your people settled in it, and from your bounty, O God, you provided for the poor. The Lord announced the word, and great was the company of those who proclaimed it.”
Living in Oregon, we get a lot of rain. And we complain about the rain. We pray for its absence, rejoice when it ends.
In the last year, my perspective on rain has changed drastically. I spent four months in a country where the daily half hour shower was something we praised God for. Rain meant the crops grew, it meant cleaner streets, and it meant we got a break from the hot, dry air. It felt good, it smelled good, and His blessing was good.
Rain became the daily reminder of God’s great love for us. It really was a time of renewal and refreshed passion for Him. I grew to love the rain, to crave the rain. I needed the rain because it felt like God was literally showering Himself on us.
I’ve come to experience God in a very tangible way through the rain. Coming home to Oregon has been an easier transition because of all the rain I used to complain about.
Where do you experience God? Are we too busy to notice the gifts He rains down on us? How can we shift our perspectives and our hearts to be open to the things He wants to bestow upon us?
“The Lord announced the word, and great was the company of those who proclaimed it.”
Let’s proclaim the word God gives us. We all experience Him differently, but the culmination of all of our experiences will be so powerful, no one will be able to deny His greatness.
My challenge to you: next time it rains, look around, take a deep breath, and let it refresh your heart.
I’ve been a part of Grace Chapel since 2001, and have been working with Ardent Youth since 2011. My favorite thing in the world is learning from junior high students more about who God is. In the last year I have lived in Rwanda, graduated college from George Fox, gotten married to my best friend, and have been hired for my dream job! It’s been crazy but the most amazing, challenging, fulfilling time of my life. I’m excited to see what God does next in Josh and I’s life!
