P3: The Crown and the Pit

Psalm path to beach

Psalm 103:1-4

Of David.

Praise the Lord, my soul;
    all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
Praise the Lord, my soul,
    and forget not all his benefits—
who forgives all your sins
    and heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit
    and crowns you with love and compassion

When I hear the word “Psalms”, I immediately think of the word “pit”.  Psalm 103 was one of the first verses that I remember reading in the Bible after I gave my heart to Jesus over 20 years ago.  But during these 20 years, He has done so much more than just the initial redemption from that pit.

As I reread Psalm 103, it reminded me that I’ve received so many “benefits” from God that surely I have forgotten many of them.  But, the ones that stand out in my life are forgiveness of my past sins, and then continuing on with the present ones over and over and over again; usually the same new ones, but shown in different ways.  He has graciously healed me from cancer that my doctors now refer to as a miracle.  He has sustained my marriage and family through many trials and continues to do so to this day.  He has also tenderly ushered me into being older with the firm conviction of my salvation for all eternity.  Praise God!

The “crown” part makes me uncomfortable, but I do understand love and compassion for others.  He has allowed me to praise His holy name to many individuals that He provided during my walk on this earth and hopefully, helped to plant seeds for His Kingdom.  He doesn’t need me for any of this, but I certainly need Him working and walking with me in my life.

Just a small footnote:  When asked to write for the Authentic Grace blog, I had originally decided to use Psalm 9:1.  But when I searched for that verse in the Bible on my tablet, it would not come up!  I just figured it was the internet again, so I closed it down and tried again.  Well, God had another verse for me and when I tried it again, Psalm 103 appeared on my tablet!  I’ve been praying that the Holy Spirit would guide me, and He did.

Praise the Lord, Oh my soul!
