Advent 2016: The Greatest Gift

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Tis the season for gifts, isn’t it?

Wish lists for gifts, hottest trending gifts, must-have gifts, cars for gifts {whaaat?}, gifts for her, for him, for home.  Online shopping, free shipping, lines at the stores, lines to get into the stores.  Gifts “just because”, gifts for loved ones, and a gift just for the mailman…who delivers your gifts.  Gifts given because you couldn’t think of anything else and gifts given with careful intention.  Gifts wrapped up and ready.

But what about the greatest gift you could give?

You might know where this is going.  Because this whole month, we’ve been in waiting.  At Authentic Grace, we’ve been exploring what it means to experience the Advent of Christ.

The One who is the Greatest Gift

And this One Great Gift brought the greatest gift that WE can give:  LOVE.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only son…” John 3:16

This child is born for us, this son is given to us, that this human child and Son of God belongs to me, that I know him, have him, love him, that I am his and he is mine – on this alone my life now depends.

Christ came IN LOVE.  His birth signifies God’s love to us because he wanted us to be with Him again.  Christ’s life was LIVED in love.  His death and resurrection was completed BECAUSE of love.  Even Christ said that the most important commandments were to love God with all of your being, and to love others as you would yourself. He could have said that they were to always do the right thing and make sure you pay your taxes!

Love covers. Love forgives.  Love extends.  Love gives.  Love accepts.  Love pains and heals.  Love opens eyes, opens hearts, opens minds to self and to others.  Love is the reflection of our beautiful God and of the Savior born FOR US.

Wrap those gifts, think of others, and spread joy as you give.  But the GREATEST gift you can give anyone this time of year, from your loved ones to the cashier at Target, is love.  ~Especially the love of Christ’s coming 2,000 years ago and of his coming again.

The Christ-Child is coming!

Draw near, friends.
