God Is: Comfort & Light

It was a day of unimaginable pain and heartbreak when I heard the news of a family that perished possibly at the hand of a man who set their house and two other buildings on fire.  These sweet family members were my friends.

The pain cut my heart like a knife that was being twisted and it brought me literally to my knees before my God and Savior. It happened the very week that 24/7 prayer was happening. I spent my hour in the prayer room just crying out to God for my friend’s family and their huge community of faith. I likened it to an earthquake happening at the epicenter of the church.

I went to the worship night the week of 24/7 prayer. Before I left, I told God “I need you to show up for me tonight.” I did not know how that would look but I got there early and went into the prayer room.  A few friends were in there and they graciously let me share what was on my heart and prayed for me. Then I went into worship still with a broken heart and a few sweet sisters met me and hugged me and one even sat with me, listened and let me cry on her shoulders as she cried with me. Then other friends came and prayed with me. My life group has been an amazing place of comfort and love. Since then God has brought healing to me and I have to say that God can use people to bring comfort to others. God showed up even telling a friend of mine she needed to be there and not even knowing why she went and God used her.

I have a few Scriptures to share that I see so much lived out in the community at Grace Chapel:

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort ourselves received from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.”

2nd Corinthians 1:3-5

One thing I came back with from IF: Gathering is keeping our eyes on the Master. I have visited several of the lighthouses in Oregon and I was thinking how in life we all have storms when times can be so dark and it is hard to see the light of the Father. But I love that I have a community that can lead us to the light of life.

“In him was life, and that life was the light of mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

John 1:4 & 5

Right now I picture God as the lighthouse, the beacon on the hill for those who are in the darkness. May each of us be able to share that light with those in darkness. Jesus is the lighthouse keeper that keeps the oil from running out, that keeps the light shining in the harbor when our little lifeboat is being tossed by the waves of the world and Satan tries to keep us from seeing Christ.
